Long exposure techniques carve and create sculptural form from pure light.
I made a variable speed turntable, rather like a traditional record player, and in a darkroom rotating lights create these beautiful trails and patterns. Towards the edge of the turntable the lights accelerate and create perfect concentric circles before blurring into oblivion. Lights at the centre move more slowly, and succumbing to the effects of gravity begin to move with an erratic, less predictable trajectory. A sense of order within chaos, a microcosm of the universe.
I coined the name Gyrograph, I think it makes sense; they are pure photographs, one exposure, no AI or retouching, and they are gyroscopic in execution and technique.
The title and use of the hashtag refers to the hexadecimal code (colour) of the pixel at the centre of the image. Each one as unique as a fingerprint, yet in need of a title if only for identification, and of course the hashtag has meaning in this world of social media. I doubt I'll ever get two the same, but if I do that would be a neat serendipitous twist. What I thought was a rather prosaic and analytical system of captioning and cataloguing has in fact added a further dimension to the concept.
