This is the road that links the Passes of Hardknott and Wrynose, there is no easy way out - brutal hill climbs whichever way you turn. At this point on the Fred Whitton the riders will have covered over 100 miles of arguably the toughest road ride in the UK.
I have been in this situation on a number of occasions and it’s normally at this point that I start reciting ‘The Lord’s my Shepherd’ - “though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death...” Don’t know why!
